Cologne lab scientist, Hans Geyer revealed detailed figures on Friday at an anti-doping conference hosted by FIFA. The lab initially found 184 cases involving the popular illegal steroid stanozolol, used by Ben Johnson at the 1988 Olympics, and 82 of oral turinabol, steroid widely used in the former East Germany.
Geyer said many of the positives since November 2012 involved athletes in the weightlifting and wrestling divisions, and all were reported to the World Anti-Doping Agency and governing bodies of all sports leagues.
Geyer told reporters on the sidelines of the conference that it was surprising they found so many cases, but was excited that the new technology is so accurate.
German broadcaster ARD reported earlier this month that the testing at the Cologne lab and other labs in Moscow, Russia confirmed it was using a new and improved method to test and retest samples from the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics.
Scientists at the Cologne lab have used Russian=developed tests which can detect the smallest amount of steroids of any testing device do far, and can trace steroids back around six months after the athletes took them.
Previously reported cases earlier this year included almost a hundred track and field athletes in Turkey, and the International Weightlifting Federation identified 29 athletes on its website who were banned from the Federation this year for using one or both of the two steroids.
