The program, which was put together by police and other law firms ins Roebothan, McKay, and Marshall, provides students with a driving simulator to test their ability to drive and text at the same time. Unfortunately, according to Valerie Hynes, a lawyer with one of the firms, accidents caused by texting and driving are on a steady incline.
In the simulation, pedestrians can be struck down, drivers rear ended, and cars full of passengers can be driven off the road. Sometimes, the cause is clear: the driver of the car at fault had been texting.
Gonzaga High School students in St. John’s who test out the simulator were quickly convinced that texting while driving can be a very seriously dangerous to not only the driver, but other people in cars on the road. Kurtis Thornhill said his simulated drive was going smoothly, until he picked up his phone, looked down to see who had texted him, and hit a light pole.
“I started off well, and then they asked me to start texting a guy, so I did, but then I missed a turn and when I tried to recover, I just ended up hitting a light pole head on.”
RNC Const. Kevin Foley said these texting and driving and “distracted driving” incidents are closely coming up to par with drunk driving and speeding, which are the two leading major causes or factors in motor vehicle collisions.
