This National Pet Month, pet owners across the United States are celebrating the many reasons why they enjoy the company of their dogs, cats and other creatures. While the initiatives associated with this month range from pet adoption to appreciating the companionship these animals bring, Lake Wylie Pet Resort in South Carolina remains focused on the importance of keeping our pets active and healthy.
Pet health remains a top concern this month, especially when it comes to animal obesity. A recent NBC article discussed the findings of pet obesity led by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP). According to the report, APOP found that more than half of cats and dogs were characteristically obese.
NBC adds, “The APOP worked with veterinarians and pet owners during the study, which found that more cats than dogs are obese. 57.6 of the cat population is obese compared to 52.6 percent of dogs, according to APOP. Of the pets that veterinarians said were obese, 93 percent of dog owners and 88 percent of cat owners initially thought their pet was in the normal weight range, according to APOP. Just like with humans, being overweight or obese can cause health problems for pets.”
Tracy Boyle, owner of Lake Wylie Pet Resort, responds to these statistics and states, “Pet obesity remains a serious concern across America. Fortunately, regular exercise and social activity can be great way to keep pets in shape and ensure that they not only remain at an appropriate weight, but also stimulated on a daily basis.”
Lake Wylie Pet Resort has created its Doggie Day Care program as a solution for pet owners that not only want to give their dogs a place to socialize during the day, but also remain active and cared for. Courtney Kulikowski, a client of the facility, states, “The Doggie Day Care program has been great to keeping my dog Romeo fit and well taken care of throughout the day while I am at work. His health has been great, and the other dogs have also helped him become a better-behaved pet—it’s truly amazing.”
While Boyle notes that daily exercise is an important thing for all pet owners to consider during National Pet Month, she also highlights other health factors that are essential to tend to. Among these needs, the Lake Wylie Pet Resort staff encourages pet owners to make sure their animals are protected against fleas, ticks and other insect dangers that are commonly associated with the outdoors during the summer months. In addition, those engaging in outdoor activity with their animals should make sure their pets are hydrated on a regular basis.
