There are almost 180,000 people living in Britain who were born in the USA, according to latest statistics.
Now, former American President Jimmy Carter’s favourite charity, Habitat for Humanity, is on a mission – to make the organisation as well known here as it is in the States.
Starting with the 40,000 strong UK business community in London, its chosen today – the iconic Fourth of July – to appeal to American ex-Pats as they celebrate with family and reflect on home.
Habitat for Humanity is well known in the States and has helped change the lives of more than 30,000 American families for the better.
Chief Executive in Britain, Rebecca Martin, says the charity’s aim is to ensure that every person has a safe and decent place to live. But, with 1.6 billion people living in housing poverty across the globe, she concedes it’s a big job.
She explains: Without help, the American dream for them is just that – a dream! Our message to this important diaspora community is simple. You know of our work back home. Now, as we celebrate the freedom and independence of a nation this Fourth of July, we need you to help us give millions of men, women and children a hand up to deliver the future they so desperately need.”

Notes to Editors:
Habitat for Humanity is an international charity that aims to break the cycle of poverty by eliminating poverty housing and homelessness. We believe that everyone, regardless of race, gender or belief, has a right to a safe, decent place to live. We champion that right and also take practical action, working with communities around the world to empower them to design and manage appropriate housing projects in their neighbourhood. Since 1976 we have helped over 3 million people.
