Good news for the struggling community of Adak, as it appears that fish processing will finally return.
The Trident Seafoods company is looking to process fish in the plant that was vacated by the Icicle Seafoods company. Even better for the Adak area, another company is also looking to utilize the processing area, which means the there are bidders that will help up the final price and thus revenue into the area. The Adak city manager, Layton Locket, did warn that the final say on who is allowed into the area is up to the Aleut Corporation.
“A deal should be in the works,” Lockett said Monday.
Trident did make an offer to buy the process equipment for a $2 million sum to keep it in the area, which has been struggling since the loss of the Naval Air Station. “We are diligently working to get that plant open as soon as possible,” Lockett said. He described Trident’s proposal as a “lease-purchase” with a partial purchase up front, but declined to provide further details because a deal has not yet been reached.
Locket noted that the talks finally were filled with enough information to present to the Adak city Council in late August, which meant the potential could be talked about more candidly. Lockett did not divulge information regarding the possibility of ever more potential bidding parties.
Clem Trillion, the Aleut Corporation lobbyist, noted that the other prospects for the Bristol Bay salmon buyer, doubts that there will be much that Trident can do in the way of financial muscle
“There will be somebody there this winter,” Tillion said this week. “I’d bet on Trident.”
He noted that Trident has backed up a step since the push of competition has entered the fray.
Both sides are clear that the use of a new company would help the struggling area with an influx of money, not only in basic revenue but in tax revenue. The Navy's removal only gave work for the cleanup. Lockett did point out that luckily the Icicle corporation left during a low-fishing yearly season, and so the damage to the community was minimized.
