WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- In celebration of National Poetry Month, Virginia's Poet Laureate Sofia M. Starnes is asking Virginians to share their nearest and dearest memory of a poem for her Nearest Poem Anthology to be published by Cedar Creek Publishing in 2014.
Sofia M. Starnes was appointed Poet Laureate of Virginia for 2012-2014 by Gov. Bob McDonnell in August, 2012. She immediately set out to connect with Virginians by encouraging a dialogue about poetry through her anthology project. "We all have a poem with our name on it, not literally, and not a poem that we 've written, but a poem that seems addressed to us with unique immediacy, as if the poet had been thinking of us when he or she wrote the poem. When we find such a poem, the connection is intimate, and we wish to keep the poem near us, close at hand," explained Ms. Starnes.
The Nearest Poem Anthology aims to collect the poems from Virginians that they've found such a profound and personal connection to and create a lasting testimony to the immediacy of poetry in everyday life. "My hope is that through this anthology project individuals will enjoy the discovery of their nearest poem and eventually those of many fellow Virginians," says Starnes.
To participate in the project, Virginians are asked to share their favorite poem along with a 200-250 word essay on why the poem is meaningful to them. Fifty to a hundred poems will be selected for inclusion in the anthology.
Submissions are needed by June 30, 2013. Questions about the project should be sent to Sofia Starnes at the nearestpoem@cox.net . For more information and submission details, please visitwww.sofiamstarnes.com.
