Diamond Bar, CA - June, 18, 2013 - The femtosecond laser is one of medicine's most intriguing new surgical technologies to treat one of the world's largest public health problems, responsible for nearly 50% of blindness worldwide. This amazing, new, cutting-edge technology has been used successfully in ophthalmic surgery since 2001, and was first approved for cataract surgery in the United States in 2011, with Dr. Cornell being the first surgeon in all of Los Angeles County to use the femtosecond laser for cataract surgery. Furthermore, Specialty Surgical Center, which is where Dr. Cornell performs his surgeries, is one of the few Surgery Centers to have two Femtosecond Lasers – The LenSx® Femtosecond Laser and the Catalys® Precision Laser System. Femtosecond lasers are well suited for cataract surgery because of their ability to tightly focus energy to produce precise surgical incisions. It is useful in most types of ocular surgeries due to its ultrafast pulses and its decreased energy requirements for tissue destruction, allowing for reduced unintended destruction of surrounding tissues. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 10 million cataract surgeries are performed annually worldwide. Many of those patients would tremendously benefit from the use of femtosecond lasers guided by ultra-high-resolution 3-dimensional optical coherence tomography during their cataract removal procedures.
The LenSx® Femtosecond Laser allows the surgeon to perform four of the steps of cataract surgery with the laser that would otherwise be done by hand. These steps include breaking up the nucleus of the cataract, making a perfectly round and exactly sized capsulotomy (opening in the cataract lens capsule), making the primary incision, and most importantly for Refractive Cataract Surgery, making very precisely shaped and configured depth incisions in the edge of the cornea to reduce pre-existing astigmatism. Patients with smaller amounts of astigmatism can have the astigmatism corrected with the use of a femtosecond laser during cataract surgery for an additional fee. The accuracy and precision of the laser during the surgery allows for improved refractive results and less dependence on glasses after the surgery.
Using CATALYS® Precision Laser System, Dr. Cornell can provide you with a highly customized, more accurate, and gentle treatment. Like a fingerprint, every eye has a unique size and shape. Prior to treatment, CATALYS® images your eye and makes precise 3D maps of relevant structure. This enables Dr. Cornell to create a tailored treatment plan that is customized for your eye. CATALYS® provides laser precision and creates a perfectly sized, shaped, and centered circular opening to access and remove the cataract. This precise incision helps Dr. Cornell place the new artificial lens exactly where it is intended. Dr. Cornell can use the laser to soften the hard cataract. Softening the lens with the CATALYS® is a gentle low energy approach that reduces inflammation and helps speed visual recovery.
Once the astigmatism question has been addressed, the next issue for the patient to consider is what distance, or distances, the patient wishes to see without having to depend on glasses. Generally speaking, there are three distance levels where vision can be approximated: longer distances (driving, watching TV or movies, sightseeing, etc…), intermediate distances (computer, playing cards, museum, interpersonal conversations, etc...) and closer distances (reading books, looking at cell phones, etc...). There are a variety of implant lenses available to try and address vision at these different distances, and a variety of surgical strategies possible to achieve the optical goals of the patient. Patients generally end up being largely independent of glasses depending on the lens and strategy used, but still may have the occasional need for glasses in certain situation such as: extended reading, long computer sessions, and/or night driving.
