Garbage Haulers Go High Tech

Tracking of garbage collection in one Indian city will be accomplished through GPS-enabled vehicles

The city of Coimbatore, India is going high tech when it comes to the removal of its garbage. Coimbatore Municipal Corporation will be outfitting all of its garbage collection vehicles with real time GPS enabled vehicle tracking and monitoring systems. The monitoring system will also collect data inputs from the speedometer, engine and gearbox oil levels, odometer and fuel consumption. A proper auditing record on the expenses of each vehicle will also be maintained. A senior corporation official says, "The trial run is being carried out and we are all set to launch it officially in the coming week. The pilot run was carried out in the central zone of the corporation."

Senior corporate officials and Mayor SM Velusamy are expected to announce the launch of the project next week. In the first phase of the project, the 20 wards in the central zone consisting of the 25 garbage collection vehicles already outfitted with GPS, will officially begin to operate. Two hundred of the 220 garbage collection vehicles are also planned to receive the tracking units in this phase. All vehicles registered under the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation are expected to be installed with the tracking units in the coming months. N Rajagopal, Manager, Business Development, Fleet Management Solutions, Pricol Ltd. says, "The device will have two antennas transmitting details, as per the agreement with the Coimbatore Corporation, to the main server and to the specific website through which corporation officials with login access could view and monitor the information."

Installed in the driver's cabin of the vehicle, the Asset Tracking and Monitoring System will transmit signals through twin GPS and GSM antennae to communication satellites. The signals will then bounce back to the main server. From the server, the data will be transferred to a specific IP address; corporation officials with access rights will then be able to view the data. This data will be updated every minute and satellite projected images of the vehicles movements along their routes will be mapped on a real time basis. The number of stops along the route will also be recordable. The cost of installing 200 trackers on corporation vehicles is estimated to be Rs20lakh.
