Although the color white is going out of style in the clothing industry, it is in vogue in the entertainment center market. So much so, that one contemporary furniture showroom in Passaic, New Jersey is devoting a whole website to the color. "We always have an uptick in entertainment center sales this time of year," says interior designer Gary Flax. "Labor Day sales and the beginning of football season get a lot of guys upgrading their TVs. Then they start looking for a nice wall unit."
The appetite for white is strong this year, more popular than any single color, followed closely by black. "For entertainment centers, black is a close second best seller. We actually just had a customer order a white wall unit with black glass on the front, so that probably counts as both!" says Flax with a smile.
White is not always the dominant color in an interior design scheme but it is generally in the blueprint somewhere. Everything comes in wood, mirrored, black, white … and not every furniture retailer has white or black as their bestselling color. Flax explains why, "We make every entertainment center to order. Our customers can point to any piece of furniture in our catalog and say, 'Gary, I like that wall unit… But I'd like it better in black glass with chrome handles.' No problem. At other furniture stores-- Even online—customers might have two or three finish choices… Or none."
Today’s customers like to mix and match. "We call it customizable furniture," asserts Flax. "People can get creative with the furniture. Customers might order white with colored glass or mirrored doors, for example." He also says wood finishes are very popular this year -- generally with different colors for drawers and doors.
