For the second week in a row, Google's spam team has taken down a link network. Backlinks.com was the culprit this week. Google's Matt Cutts announced the takedown on Twitter. He cited a line from Backlinks.com’s marketing pitch: “‘Our installation code/software used to publish the sold links is not detectable by the search engine bots.’ Au contraire!” Clearly, Google is on the hunt for paid link networks. Even if your paid link network has not been targeted yet, the odds are good it will fall under Google spam team’s radar in the near future.
Backlinks.com has not publicly commented yet on the subject, although the same day Google made its announcement on Twitter, Backlinks.com and its parent company NextNet Media began a promotion offering 3x the number of dangerous links for the same price. They also removed the FAQ question Cutts referred to, named "Google Punish," in which the company stated, “…their paid links were perfectly safe and were in no danger of being penalized.”
One week ago, also on a Friday, a link selling service on a black hat forum, Anglo Rank, caught the attention of Google's spam team. Since then they have been targeted by Google for their paid links. Their clients have been receiving unnatural link warnings in Google Webmaster Tools, although the company claims they skated through unscathed. So, if you have purchased paid links and dealt with the devil, check your Webmaster Tools account frequently to see how your hand is playing out. After all, Google is God and you will have to answer to him sooner or later.
