First Leg of Large-Scale LED Lighting Project 50% Complete

More than 3,000 of the 5,800 energy efficient bulbs have been installed in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

A plan that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 900 tons and save around £150,000 a year in electricity is now past the halfway point in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Modern LED alternatives will be replacing all the obsolete street lighting lanterns in Eastbourne. More than 3,000 of the 5,800 bulbs have now been installed as part of a countywide drive by the East Sussex County Council to save £885,000 from the street lighting budget over the next three years.

This leg of the project is expected to be completed by the end of March; then engineers from Colas, the council’s contractor, will move on to Hastings for the next leg, where 5,500 additional LED bulbs will be installed. In Eastbourne, the changes include dimming the lights on some streets. Each leg of the project, which is being completed on a ward-by-ward basis in the borough’s nine wards, is accompanied by a series of public information events.

“This is a large-scale operation but it will deliver big benefits to Eastbourne and the county as a whole,” said Carl Maynard, lead council member for transport and environment. “Switching to LED lights will help to reduce our energy bill, cut down on long-term maintenance costs, provide better quality lighting and reduce light pollution. It’s very important that we keep residents informed and we have done that by visiting every area of Eastbourne, as well as offering people the chance to comment on the changes online.”

Where existing lights needs replacing or by design, LED lights will be installed elsewhere in the county. Recent advances in the technology have reduced their cost and increased the performance of LED lighting. “We’re very pleased with the way the work has progressed so far and we’re on course to complete the work in Eastbourne in the spring,” concluded Maynard.
