In the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Typhoon Yolanda, which struck the Philippines in November, 10,000 people or more have been killed or are missing, officials believe. Following the devastating typhoon, Philippines President Benigno Aquino has declared a state of calamity and hundreds of countries are providing relief.
Search engine Google is also providing a free service to the distressed nation. The company has kicked its Google Person Finder service into high gear. Many people have come up missing but thousands of records are being kept on the victims and Google has made the records searchable to the public.
If you have friends or loved ones in the Philippines and have not heard from them, Google’s person finder service may be able to help. Currently the service is tracking almost 32,000 records in the region and the data is fully searchable. Anyone seeking information on anyone caught up in the typhoon can use the Web app to post a name of a missing individual or search the records for their status. The Google Person Finder service for Typhoon Haiyan app is available in many languages including Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese and English.
All data entered into Google Person Finder is searchable, available to the public and accessible by anyone, Google said. If you want to post a name and receive emailed status updates on a particular person the app has that functionality. By clicking the ‘Subscribe to updates about this person’ button on any record, the Google Person Finder will automatically send you an email when information about that person becomes available on their dedicated database.
