Medical Product Manufacturing News magazine has named Will Clifton, M.D. to its "30 under 30" list of medtech engineers and designers changing the future of medicine and the medical device industry.

HOUSTON, TX (August 5, 2014) . . . Medical Product Manufacturing News magazine has named Will Clifton, M.D., director of Research & Development for Houston-based Procyrion, Inc., to its “30 under 30” list of medtech engineers and designers changing the future of medicine and the medical device industry.

In managing Procyrion's preclinical research and development program for Aortix™, the first catheter-deployed, intra-aortic pump designed to rest and heal the heart, Clifton is responsible for sourcing sites, drafting protocols, and executing studies. Additionally, he has led efforts to expand indications under development and is leading the first-in-man study design efforts.

“Will is one of those unique individuals that can bring the medical, engineering and entrepreneurial skills to the table.  He has been a tremendous contributor to our team, and we are proud of this well-deserved recognition,” says Benjamin A. Hertzog, PhD, Procyrion’s president and CEO.

An innovator from the start, Clifton won first place in the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest while attending junior high school in Waco, Texas.  He also developed an implantable glucose sensor while earning a bachelor’s of science degree from the University of Southern California.  More recently, Will founded enventure, “Houston’s home for medical entrepreneurs.” This Houston-based organization supports life-sciences entrepreneurs by providing networking, education, mentorship, and matchmaking.

“Will’s analytical rigor and ability to extract and clearly communicate the most meaningful metrics sets him in a class above his peers,” says Christopher Durst, PhD, Procyrion’s head of Product Development.

On the heels of being named an under 30 innovator, Clifton has been invited to speak at the “Medical Device Masterminds Under 30” session during the Medical Design & Manufacturing Exposition and Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota scheduled for October 29 - 30, 2014.  He will address the challenges, successes and opportunities he has faced during the development of Aortix.  More than 7,000 design and engineering experts are expected to attend the educational conference.
