In a new infographic released by Distance Learning, an online website for students and educators to find online degrees and education news, outlines the devastating effects of overfishing. Overfishing occurs when fish and other marine species are caught faster than they can reproduce, and generally happens when large amounts of fishing boats and nets happen in one area. It destroys the marine ecosystem, and jeopardizes food security for more than a billion people.
Distance Learning felt that the amount of people affected by overfishing was enough to raise awareness on the issue, and to hopefully ignite a spark of passion for the environment. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that over half of the world’s fish stocks are fully exploited, and less than one percent is recovering from depletion. Unfortunately, it isn’t happening as fast as it should, since 7 percent of the world’s fish stocks are completely depleted.
The introduction of new factory boats has lead to a 7 percent growth in catches every year since the 1950s. This might seem like a good idea to capture fish for people to eat, but nothing has been left in the water to breed. In fact, overfishing has pushed the Pacific Bluefin Tuna down a shocking 96.4 percent versus unfished levels.
Pavan Sukhdev, who works with the UN Environment Programme, says “We are in the situation where 40 years down the line, we will be effectively out of fish.” To further that statement, scientists have predicted that if current trends continue, world food fisheries could collapse entirely by 2050.
