While some may be unaware, disability-related incomes comes in different forms. There are two different mainstays of the insurance and income types: SSI and SSDI. Now, Louisiana Disability Law has released an infographic that helps individuals grasp the difference between the two types, and allows them to better navigate the characteristics of both.
The first type is Supplemental Security Income. The second, often mistaken for the first, is Social Security Disability Insurance.
While each program is overseen by the Social Security Administration and is permits medical eligibility in somewhat the same fashion, the distinction between the two is as vast as apples and newspapers.
SSD/SSDI is available to those who have accumulated the correct number of work credits. Meanwhile, the SSI program is made for the strictly needs-based individuals according to both income and assets. Those who are insured in the former have worked the correct number of years, and have put in enough money to then be allowed to take money out. For the latter system, an individual must have less than $2,000 in assets and hold a highly limited income. The SSI program includes benefits for disabled individuals who are low-income and who do not earn enough for the SSD/SSDI programs.
How one receives the income is also vastly different. Those under the SSDI coverage receive what is known as “auxiliary Benefits” and there is a 5 month waiting period for such benefits. The monthly stipen for the recipients often has much to do with how much the individual makes. For those who receive SSI, the amount eligible has to do with where one lives and the monthly income that is created. Benefits can be collected within the same month as well.
What both items have in common is that many individuals depend on the incomes in order to be able to subsist due to inability to attain or maintain work. Many of these individuals could not survive without the income, and would be left to the plight of the homeless and destitute. That is why understanding difference and characteristics is so important.
