New Documentary Explores the Lives of the Next Generation of Farmer

The lives of these hard working Americans are explored in detail as their future is speculated upon

A new documentary that explores the life of the farmers of the future will be released next year. The feature film entitled “Farmland” tells the stories of ranchers and farmers who are now in their early 20s. It is now in post-production and an advanced trailer to promote the documentary has recently been released. "This film isn’t just about what it’s like to be a farmer; it’s about a way of life. It’s also about a subject that affects our lives daily,” says James Moll, the Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker who made the film.

The new feature film follows United States’ next generation of agriculture. It examines the lives of young ranchers and farmers across various regions of the country. “I make documentaries because it’s a thrill to explore new topics and meet people that I might not otherwise cross paths with,” Moll explains. “While making Farmland, I found myself immersed in a community of some of the most hard working, passionate people I’ve ever met. This film isn’t just about what it’s like to be a farmer, it’s about a way of life. It’s also about a subject that affects our lives daily.”

Moll has produced and directed a wide range of documentaries covering topics from the Sahara Desert to the Holocaust and has worked with celebrated directors such as Steven Spielberg and stars such as Matt Damon. He received an Academy Award for his film “The Last Days” and a Grammy for producing and directing “Foo Fighters: Back and Forth.”

Support and funding for the film was provided by The U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance, an organization made up of 80 separate rancher/farmer organizations. “Farmland” gives viewers a firsthand glimpse into the lives of young people that make up this high-risk/high-reward occupation. It is a way of life that is generally passed down from father to son and generation to generation. In the spring of 2014, the film will premiere nationwide.
