5 Tips To Kitty Healthcare

The common questions new cat owners ask summed up in 5 tips.

Cats are noble and elegant animals but there is not much literature that answers the many questions a new cat owner has about taking care of them. Many people choose cats because they are a low maintenance pet but there are a few things you should know.

1. Vaccinations

The shots your new feline friend needs depends on factors such as its overall health, age and whether it goes outside, according to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Generally, cats should be vaccinated for rabies, feline herpes virus and feline distemper. If your cat will be going outdoors, you may want to consider vaccines for feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia virus, which is the major viral killer of cats.

2. Hair Loss

A certain amount of hair loss is normal but if the loss seems excessive, patchy or is accompanied by inflamed skin there may be a problem. Most often, the cause is excessive scratching due to flea infestation or allergic skin irritants. Older cats sometimes suffer from hyperthyroidism. A cat’s fur and whiskers periodically fall out and grow back.

3. Vomiting

Periodic vomiting is normal in cats and there is no reason to panic. Cats normally consume some unsavory snacks and it is just nature’s way of getting rid of them. Hairballs, which are normal byproducts of grooming, can also cause vomiting. However if the vomiting last more than 48 hours or contains blood contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

4. Hunger Strikes

Cats are temperamental and extremely finicky creatures. Changes in their food or feeding routines and environmental stresses such as having a guest stay over for a few days can cause them to rebel. Hunger will eventually end their protest but if it last more than 48 hours contact your veterinarian.

5. Weight Gain Or Loss

There is an abundance of fat cats in the world today and it is mostly a result of overfeeding and lack of exercise. A good exercise routine and a diet would certainly lighten their weight but it is really not a major concern. However, if your cat is losing weight it is quite another matter. Intestinal parasites such as hookworms, tapeworms or roundworms are the most common causes of weight loss in cats and should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian as soon as possible. More serious problems such as dental infections, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease and cancer may also be the cause of weight loss.
