CNN has published a new report on preventative health initiatives by a world-renowned doctor whose aim is to improve the quality of life in impoverished countries.
Dr. Annette Bosworth has several advocacies under her belt under the Preventive Health Strategies initiative, two of the most notable of which are water distillation and mobile phone donations. Both programs are designed to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged families in countries like Haiti.
The water distillation project involves donations to purchase the Slingshot technology for disadvantaged communities in Haiti. The Slingshot technology refers to the water purification device powered by a stirling engine with a combustible fuel source, which can produce potable water from virtually any source including ocean water. As one of the so-called water charities of Dr. Bosworth, donations are gladly accepted in behalf of the beneficiaries with one of the donors being Walker Haber, Dr. Bosworth’s son.
The phone donation project recycles old smartphones, mobile phones and cameras as well as iPods and iPads for the benefit of families in Haiti. These gadget donations are not sold as is or sold for their parts but are given to beneficiaries for their daily use. Thus, the gadgets must be in working condition with the capability for texting.
The beneficiaries can then use the gadgets to communicate with their healthcare providers (i.e., doctors and nurses), to secure relevant information about their health (i.e., hygiene and sanitation) from the Internet, and to access clinics for fast medical attention, among others. The donors can provide valuable assistance to the people of Haiti if and when they cannot go there for any reason.
