The contest was followed closely by the online trading community in Australia. Known as the Sun Herald ShareRace, the competition was closely fought between leaders: shares whiz, Mathers of TradingLounge.com.au, and astrologer Doreen Daze. Amazingly, Mathers could not change his selections and was able to hold on to more. Surprisingly, iNet, the best stock on the bourses, was not on the top competitors’ portfolio.
An average $10,000 portfolio with 10 stocks on the day the race started would have shrunk to $98,680 four weeks later. Mathers did $3,202 better in a corrective market with Materials and Finance lower.
Mathers has been trading since 1982. He started his professional trading with Japanese futures companies Hoei and Shoin, from which he learnt the Japanese analysis techniques of Candlesticks and Renko. Mathers gained practical experience of the Elliot Wave Theory at Tradewinds Pty. Ltd.
